Overview:

When Wolf's Dragoons sent back reports that the Successor States were on the road to recovery, the Clans were shocked. With the knowledge that the invasion would once again be put in front of the Grand Counsel, and would eventually win, it was time for the Clans to reinforce their Toumans. While the focus was mainly on ground forces, some was directed to space.

With Ulric Kerensky's ascension to Khanhood in 3028, and the outcome of the Great Debate in 3029, the new warship design was shifted towards a ship whose sole presence would discourage attacks. Four years later, Wolf scientists finished the design for a fearsome dreadnought. Though better names may have arisen, none could have been more obvious than Dreadnought.

Construction began nearly three years later. The delay was caused by the lack of a yard-ship that could build the ship. To prevent other Clans from learning of the development, the new yard-ship was built, then moved into position in orbit of a class M9 star. The star only had an asteroid belt orbiting it, so there was little chance another Clan would try and take the system. The CW Full Moon, a Potemkin class warship, transported the material used to create the Dreadnought.

There were some small problems during construction. The yard-ship's prototype construction bay had multiple containment failures, which resulted in numerous labourers being expelled into space. Despite these incidents, the massive ship was more than 90% completed at the time of the Outbound Light's arrival. The demand for an invasion directed the Wolf leader's attention elsewhere, and the project was halted during the months of debate. When construction began again, the material was transported by normal Jumpships, as the CW Full Moon was needed in the invasion, this made the construction crawl.

In 3051, the weapons systems were brought online for the first time. On his way back to Strana Mechty Khan Ulric Kerensky was transferred to a Jumpship, and jumped to the Dreadnought's construction site. He watched as the Dreadnought targeted massive asteroids with it's forward weapons arrays, and turned them into space debris. The test a success, he transferred to another Jumpship, and jumped back to the CW Dire Wolf to continue his journey.

The ship was ready to enter service by mid 3052, but Ulric knew that should the Inner Sphere learn of it traveling to the Occupation Zone, they may believe the Truce of Tukayyid to be in danger. If this was the case, the Inner Sphere forces might launch a preemptive attack against the Clans in their weakened state. For 9 years the ship was effectively mothballed.

Shortly after the Great Refusal, Khan Vlad Ward learned of the ship's existence by receiving a preemptive Batchall outlining a Trial of Possession for the ship from Clan Snow Raven. The Raven forces were quickly defeated after the Trial was manipulated into a ground battle which they could never win. In quick response, Vlad ordered the ship be brought into service to prevent another Clan from simply walking away with the Dreadnought. Adding insult to injury, a Trial of Possession was called on one of the Steel Viper's new designs, the Noruff assault Dropship. The trial was fought in short order, and Clan Wolf won a narrow victory. The Dreadnought now had a powerful antifighter weapon.

The Steel Vipers were out for blood after Clan Wolf successfully won one of their new Dropships. At Transfer station J239H2, while on its way to the Occupation Zone, the Dreadnought was confronted by the CSV Steel Python, an Aegis heavy cruiser, and the CSV Sanra Mercer, a Sovetskii Soyuz heavy cruiser. The commanding Viper demanded a Trial of Refusal over the Noruff's loss. The Wolf commander, Star Commodore Rebecca Fetladral, accepted the challenge, and told them to use both their cruisers in the trial. The first shot of the battle was from the Dreadnought, it fired all nine of it's forward naval Gauss cannons, scoring 8 direct hits on the CSV Steel Python. The Aegis class cruiser was torn in half by the volley, and was completely destroyed by the internal ammunition explosions that followed. The CSV Sanra Mercer quickly flanked right, and attempted to flee. The Sanra rounded a large asteroid, and continued to stay on the opposite side of the rock. The Wolf Star Commodore granted hegira to the frightened Steel Vipers. The Dreadnought's aura proved in battle, the ship continued its journey to the Occupation Zone.

The ship's hull is more than 4 times stronger than the average Clan warship's, thanks to the lightweight Lamellor Ferro-Carbide armour. It was hoped that an enemy's reaction would be similar to those of the Inner Sphere when they first encountered a Clan Timber Wolf. The armament adds to this by more than doubling the firepower of a McKenna class Battleship, but unlike the McKenna, the Dreadnought has it's main guns spread all over the ship, instead of just the broad and aft sides. Another of the Dreadnought's deterrence factors is that the main guns are Heavy Naval Gauss Cannons (HNGC). It mounts 54 of them, more than 13 times more than any other Clan warship. These weapons are massive, and can destroy a dropship in a single shot. To add to other ships' plight, they are mounted in trios, on heavily armoured turrets. These are backed up by 24 naval autocannons, and the versatile Maelstrom AR-10 missle launchers.

The ship was designed following Star League battleships' examples, and as such, there are no conventional weapons mounted on the ship and its only antifighter weaponry are capital missiles. But that does not mean the ship is ineptly equipped to battle fighters. The ship's complement of 70 Omnifighters can keep the threat of swarmed fighter attacks to a minimum. The cargo bay is located between the front "claw" and the body of the ship. While this makes it hard for the small craft to exit the bay, it also makes it difficult for the enemy to attack it. To add to the ship's aura, the engines were enlarged at the cost of cargo space. The ship is able to keep up with most Clan warships, and outrun others. Should the ship ever be boarded, the ship's complement of 2 Binaries of Elementals should be able to fight back any intruders.

The Dreadnought needs an escort despite its power. The onboard cargo space is only 30000 tonnes, hardly enough to keep the ship operational for long periods of time. Its dropship escort consists of 1 Noruff assault Dropship, 2 Overlord-Cs, and 3 Union-Cs. The dropships carry the entire Omega Galaxy when the galaxy moves in force. The Warship escort consists of two Sklabos class corvettes, CW Chaos and CW Anarchy, two upgraded Vincent Mk43 class corvettes, CW Trailblazer and CW Relentless Pursuit, and a Lola III class destroyer, CW Nature's Wrath. The Sklabos calss corvettes each carry 100,000 tonnes of cargo for the CW Dreadnought. The ship was named the flagship of the newly created Omega Galaxy, and given the best crew the Clan could supply. As it is a command ship, a Hyper Pulse Generator was installed to keep other forces informed during an operation.

At the present time, there is only one Dreadnought class warship, which is quite fortunate for other naval powers. It was named the CW Dreadnought, after its class, as most premiere models are. There are no plans to build another, as it took vast amounts of resources to build, and maintain, the original over the 25 years before it was put into service.
